Hi CPT-UK mailing list folk!
I hope you are all surviving this return in miserable weather!
I'm writing to tell you that we have an exciting visitor coming to the
London Mennonite Centre on March 26th. Janet Benvie is a full-time CPTer
who will share with us a bit about her most recent experiences in
Israel/Palestine, as well as her longer-term involvement with CPT. Here's
what she has to say about meeting with you all:
"I trained with CPT in January 2005 and joined as a reservist/part timer. I
spent 6 weeks in Baghdad in the summer of 2005, and from that experience
felt called to peace work with CPT full time. I left teaching (working with
children with special needs) and began full time with CPT in July 2006. I
spent 4 months in Suleimaniya in the Kurdish north of Iraq. I spent October
in Hebron, then returned there at the end of December, and will return (via
the Steering Committee meeting in Chicago) from there at the end of March.
I am passionate about developing and promoting CPT in the UK. I want to
involve UK churches in CPTs peace work, I want to encourage them to hear
Jesus' call to peace that echoes through the ages. A call that the churches
have so often been deaf to.
I will be in London on my way home from the Steering Committee in Chicago
and want to use that short time to meet with people interested in CPTs peace
work.
As a (new) member of the Steering Committee (SC), and the only person from
the UK, I will be in a position to tell people about what CPT has been doing
and how they are moving forward, and listen and take back things to the SC.
I want to represent CPTers and CPT supporters in the UK on the SC, I want
not only to hear what people are saying now, but at any time in my 3 years
on the SC. It is always easier communicating by telephone or email when you
can put a face to a name.
As someone who has recent experience in Iraq (I left at the end of November)
I can relate what I heard from Iraqis and talk about CPTs work there. As
someone just back from three months in Hebron and At Tuwani (in the southern
Hebron hills) I can speak about the current situation in Palestine, relate
what Palestinians are telling us, and talk about CPTs work there as well. I
also had quite a bit of contact with Israeli peace groups. "
I apologize that this is horrendously last minute, and I really hope you can
all come anyway! Directions to the centre can be found at
http://www.menno.org.uk/node/37. Our evening of informal chat will begin at
7:30pm.
Please do email me if you can come, or if you have any further questions!
in peace,
Dora-Marie
